When you’re looking for a product to solve a problem, where do you turn to research your options? Personally, I head straight to Reddit for honest, in-depth reviews and conversations about products I’m on the fence about.
For marketers, the platform can be intimidating. Reddit users have little patience for brands that try to hijack conversations for promotional purposes, and when a product falls short, they’re rarely shy about saying so.
But Dove knew the power of a real, honest Reddit review. And even more than that, they believed in their product enough to put it to the test in front of the hard-to-please community. They figured out a way to let Reddit users do the talking for their marketing campaign, even when they had something negative to say. And it worked.
Dove’s r/eal Reviews campaign invited Reddit users to try its Intensive Repair hair mask and share their honest opinions. The brand then featured 50 unedited reviews across billboards and social media, including less-than-glowing feedback.
The result was more than one billion impressions, hour-long lines at its pop-up event, increased sales and a campaign built around trust.
I think we can learn a lot from this high-risk, high-reward campaign.
1. Credibility is more powerful than polished marketing.
Customers know when they’re being marketed to. A perfectly worded testimonial can feel less believable than an honest review that acknowledges a product’s limitations. Real experiences give potential customers something they can relate to and trust.
2. Listen before you speak.
Dove built its campaign around conversations that were already happening in its community. Rather than forcing a message onto its audience, it paid attention to what people were saying and found a way to amplify it.
3. Trust requires confidence.
Sharing unfiltered feedback means giving up some control over your brand’s narrative. That takes confidence in your product, your service and the experience you deliver. No marketing campaign can permanently compensate for a gap between what you promise and what customers receive.

Dove’s campaign is a reminder that effective marketing isn’t always about having the perfect message. Sometimes we need to give our audience a reason to believe us.
At Bark, we believe the strongest marketing starts with understanding your audience, communicating honestly and building a brand experience that backs up what you say. If you’re looking for innovative and creative ways to do just that, we’d love to help.
